BACOLOD City – Is it safe to detain lawbreakers in an unfinished police station?
Construction of the Police Station 2 building on B.S. Aquino Drive has stopped. And Mayor Evelio Leonardia had no idea.
Chief Inspector Benedicto Villarias, police station commander, claimed nobody was working at the construction site now. He did not know why.
Gram Construction and Supply, the building contractor, started working on the P3-million city hall-funded building in June.
Villarias said they started using the new building as a lockup facility this month.
All their administrative work remains at the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) headquarters.
Congestion at the BCPO detention cell forced them to transfer some of the detainees to the unfinished building, said Villarias.
Leonardia promised to look into the construction. He went to the building recently but nobody told him there was a problem, the mayor told a news conference at the Bacolod City Government Center yesterday.
On May 4 the Sangguniang Panlungsod granted then Mayor Monico Puentevella the authority to sign an agreement on the city’s usufructuary rights over the 278-square meter lot at the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School II compound for the construction of the Police Station 2 building.
Aside from Puentevella, signatories to the agreement were BCPO acting director Senior Superintendent Flynn Dongbo and Leandro Montelibano, general manager of Capitol Subdivision, Inc., the lot donor.
Villarias said he already reported the matter to Dongbo./PN
