BACOLOD City – Mayor Evelio Leonardia wants to institutionalize the New Year’s Eve countdown in the city.
Leonardia said he will ask the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) about this plan. He said the SP can draft an ordinance institutionalizing the countdown.
The city has been holding the New Year’s Eve countdown every Dec. 31 at the Bacolod City Government Center for four years already, from 2010 to 2013, and 2016.
The countdown on Sunday evening will mark the local tradition’s fifth year.
A fireworks display is the highlight of the countdown, which will start with a program at 5:45 p.m. and will end at 1 a.m.
This year, the city government allocated P350,000 for the countdown.
The city government prepared raffle prizes for the public. A band will also perform live.
Leonardia said he is expecting more people to attend the countdown.
He added that the city’s New Year’s Eve countdown is inspired by the countdown in New York City.
“New York had become a symbol of New Year’s Eve because over the years, its fireworks display has been a tradition.”
The mayor said he wanted Bacolod City’s New Year’s Eve countdown “something to look forward to in the Philippines.”
This year, there will be an assigned “firecracker zone” in the city, as mandated by Executive Order 28.
Leonardia said this will prevent cases of deaths and injuries in welcoming the New Year.
“Besides, kon mag-inupdanay kita diri tanan we would feel that Bacolod is a big happy family,” he added./PN
