IPPO probes alleged police abuse of theft suspect in Calinog

ILOILO – The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has launched an investigation into allegations that personnel of the Calinog Municipal Police Station (MPS) physically abused a 24-year-old man, following a social media post about the incident.

In an official statement, the IPPO confirmed that its Investigation and Detective Management Unit is gathering evidence to establish the facts and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged police misconduct.

“The IPPO assures the public that both the reported robbery incident and the allegations of physical abuse involving police personnel will be thoroughly and impartially investigated,” the provincial police office stated.

Initial police reports revealed that the suspect was reported to the Calinog police on Oct. 9 by his landlord. The complainant was accused of entering the house owner’s room and allegedly taking the owner’s wallet, money and personal belongings.

The Calinog MPS is preparing the appropriate complaint against the suspect in connection with the reported incident, subject to legal procedures, the IPPO said.

However, the IPPO stressed that the reported theft and the allegations of physical abuse involving its personnel would be investigated separately and thoroughly.

“Any personnel found to have committed misconduct or violated the law will be held accountable in accordance with existing laws, rules, and regulations,” the IPPO said.

The provincial police office also reiterated its commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring that allegations of wrongdoing are handled fairly and transparently.

“The IPPO remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and ensuring that all allegations of wrongdoing are addressed with fairness, transparency, and accountability,” it added.

The IPPO has yet to disclose the identity of the suspect or the specific officers involved as the investigation continues./PN
