ILOILO City – How safe is meat produced in this city?
In coordination with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the city government’s Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) organized a “Basic Orientation Training on Meat Safety” recently at the Diamond Jubilee Hall from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
A total of 150 meat vendors, dealers and processors participated, according to LEEO chief Ariel Castañeda.
The trainers were veterinarians from the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Industry, FDA and City Health Office.
“We’ll try to initiate more food safety-related programs. We want markets and slaughterhouses to be well informed of proper sanitation,” said Castañeda.
The training was also in line with the Meat Safety Act which provides measures to promote safety of meat and animal products; establish and maintain essential national standards in abattoirs; regulate the importation and exportation of meat; and establish meat safety schemes.
“We will continue to pursue this program to prevent possible food-borne illnesses,” said Castañeda. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
