ROXAS City – Four island barangays in Capiz – Bantigue and Butacal in Panay town and Guba and Manapao in Pontevedra – underwent storm surge evacuation simulation drills.
They were also taught how to respond to emergency situations, most especially during typhoons.
Storm surge is the abnormal rise in seawater level during a storm, measured as the height of the water above the normal predicted astronomical tide. The surge is caused primarily by a storm’s winds pushing water onshore.
The drills and orientation were conducted by Aksyon Tabang – Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. It had the backing of HEKS Swiss Church Aid, an international organization helping the barangays after super typhoon “Yolanda” struck in 2013.
“This kind of training is one big help for the people in coastal and island barangays. They must enhance their capability in disaster risk management,” said HEKS disaster risk Reduction program manager Francisco Megoc.
Disaster risk reduction and management is one of the programs provided by HEKS to the island barangays.
Before the end of this year, three multimillion-peso two-storey evacuation centers will be turned over to barangays Binaobawan in Pilar; Bantigue in Panay; and Manapao in Pontevedra.
Earlier, a typhoon and flood simulation exercise was also conducted in the HEKS-helped barangays in Dao town: Manhoy, Duyoc and Quinayuya. (PIA-6/PN)
