BACOLOD City – A total of 19 individuals were injured after the jeepney they were riding crashed against an Acacia tree along the national highway in Purok Linasgasan, Barangay Bato, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
The bus was bound for the hinterland town Salvador Benedicto around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday when the crash happened, police said.
The injured passengers were all rushed to the Alfredo Marañon Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Sagay City after some police officers and members of the Philippine Army rescued them.
Chief Inspector Robert Mansueto, officer-in-charge of the Sagay City police station, identified the wounded passengers as 49-year-old Dionito Palandingan, 51-year-old Daniel Buque, 29-year-old Darlin Baldovia, 31-year-old Bernadette Tapang, 13-year-old Ian Tapang, 8-year-old Rina Dalaovao, 21-year-old Aireen Salazar, 47-year-old Marlyn Garcia, 28-year-old Rene Baldovia, 44-year-old Anita Suhot, 39-year-old Christine Canoy, 15-year-old Je-Ann Iwayan, 39-year-old Joffrey Torenia, 24-year-old Ma. Fe Flores Coniendo, 12-year-old Bengielyn Coniendo, 45-year-old Rebecca Macolado Delantes, 32-year-old Salome Baro Torena, 31-year-old Chona Canillo Abuna, and 53-year-old Merle Arilleta Lumawag.
The passengers were still under treatment as of this writing.
Driver Rodrigo Bernabat, 40, of Quezon City lost control of the jeepney before it the tree, according to the police.
The jeepney is owned by Raymundo Mabilog Jr. of Barangay Marcelo, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.
Bernabat was temporarily detained at the Sagay City police station lockup facility. The vehicle was currently under the custody of the police./PN
