MANILA – The Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers dealt the Racal Tile Masters Ceramica its first defeat in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Tuesday at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao.
Paolo Pontejos and Bernabe Teodoro connived for 17 points in the final quarter to frustrate Ceramica and send them to second place in the standings with its first defeat in six games.
Teodoro had seven of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, while Pontejos and new player John Ambulodto had 16 and 12 points, respectively, for the Heavy Bombers, which improved to a 3-3 slate.
“We know how strong Racal is. We kept on pushing, kept on fighting, and I told them to be ready,” said Heavy Bombers head coach Vergel Meneses as his squad ended its three-game losing skid.
Meanwhile, Team Batangas cruised to its second consecutive victory in the tournament as it waylaid the Blustar-Malaysian Dragons, 92-68, and kept its quarterfinals hopes alive.
Joseph Sedurifa led the way with double-double 21 points and 17 rebounds, while Roldan Sara added 14 for the Batangas, which improved to a 3-4 slate. The Dragons slipped to 0-6.
Sara steered the Batangas’ second period breakaway, firing nine in the team’s 27-point explosion and grab a 46-30 halftime advantage. They would extend the lead to as much as 24, 82-58, with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
“Syempre kung kaya manalo, ipapanalo. But lahat ng nangyayari sa amin, bonus na lang,” said Batangas coach Eric Gonzales. “We’re happy with what we have right now, we try to improve on that, and what we improved on, we’ll try to build on that pa.”
Jackson Corpuz dropped 19 points and eight rebounds, while Sidney Onwubere added 15 markers and seven boards for Ceramica, which joined the Café France Bakers at second place./PN
