Juan Miguel Severo, Boo Gabunada to star in ‘Dekada ‘70’ musical

BLACK Box Productions has announced the new cast members for the re-staging of Pat Valera’s “Dekada ‘70 musical, which is based on the seminal best-selling novel by Lualhati Bautista.

The story revolves around the struggles of a middle-class family during Martial Law, composed of five sons Jules, Gani, Em, Jason, and Bingo, as told from the point of view of their mother, Amanda Bartolome.

Among the new cast members for Dekada ‘70 is “The Hows of Us” star Juan Miguel Severo, who will alternate with Paw Castillo as Willy, the hippie best friend of activist Jules.

“As an artist-activist, obviously I feel strongly about this subject that’s why I didn’t have to think about it, talagang sure agad ako,” the actor and spoken word artist told ABS-CBN News.

Meanwhile, Boo Gabunada, who played Emman, the probinsyano college student in the hit musical “Ang Huling El Bimbo”, will take on the role of the pensive and academic Em.

“He really wanted to do it but then had eventual schedule conflicts. We did find a gem with Esteban Fulay, though. Now, Boo joins the cast to alternate with Esteban – not to claim his role, but to speak his truth as well,” said Pat.

The other cast member is Justine Peña, who played Gabbi in the hit rock musical “Sa Wakas”. In “Dekada 70,” she will portray the character of Evelyn, the girlfriend and eventually wife of Gani.

In 2002, “Dekada ‘70 was adapted into a movie under Star Cinema, starring Vilma Santos as Amanda and Christopher de Leon as her husband, Julian.

The musical adaptation was first staged in June 2018 by UP Dulaang Laboratoryo.

Produced by Black Box Productions, the same group behind the popular musical “Mula Sa Buwan, Dekada ‘70 will run from Feb. 21, 2020 to Mar. 8, 2020, with its first weekend run to coincide with the 34th anniversary of the People Power revolution. (Push)
