A bloody hypocrite and opportunist…

THE STREETS of one of the “most liveable cities” in the Philippines, “I Am Iloilo” were once again submerged in flood waters last Friday. The continuous rains brought by the tail end of Typhoon “Marce” once more made a mockery of the much ballyhooed flood control and drainage projects of Sen. Franklin Drilon and former World Mayor No. 5 Jed Mabilog. The whole city was in shambles and colleague Rhick Albay describes it as “a post-apocalyptic scenario” as thousands of commuters were stranded when public transportation stopped due to rising floodwaters. But then again I am not surprised; this occurrence happens every time we have heavy rains expect an encore of a “post-apocalyptic scenario.”

So what else is new? Expect pictures of our politicians’ i.e. former World Mayor No. 5 Jed Mabilog and Sen. Franklin Drilon inspecting flooded areas and making pronouncements or justifying their so-called flood control projects. I will no longer be surprised if Drilon blames it on Duterte or if Sen. Leila de Lima gets wind of it and blames it on “extrajudicial killings”, perhaps “frailties of the weather.”

This I overheard while waiting out the “post-apocalyptic scenario” in Starbucks: “The good Lord is on the side of President Duterte as He knows that there’s a rally supposedly protesting the burial of Marcos in that cemetery when really it’s just an excuse to attack Duterte, that’s why God rained on the rallyists.” So there.

But we’re not really going to talk about Friday’s “post-apocalyptic scenario” as everyone seems to be doing it. Let’s talk about another politician who is a bloody hypocrite and opportunist; (drum roll …) the PCOS machines-elected Vice President Leni Robredo.

For all her projections and posturing as a wholesome and progressive public official, she’s no different from the rest of the traditional politicians. For starters, when she was campaigning for vice president, she had pictures all over wearing tsinelas as supposedly a symbol of her late husband, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary Jessie Robredo. She even wore yellow shirts with tsinelas as logo, the purpose of which was to project her image as one with the advocacies of her late husband who always wore tsinelas even going to the office because he was one with the masa.

By the way, do you know why Jessie Robredo liked wearing tsinelas? A source from the DILG said the late Jessie Robredo had really bad ingrown nails, hence the preference for tsinelas over shoes. So there’s nothing really heroic about it; just a severe issue in personal hygiene.

Fast forward today, Leni is now “Vice President.” It is an open secret that Jessie Robredo died under highly questionable circumstances and the events leading to and after the tragic plane crash were highly suspicious and still unanswered. She has considerable influence now that she’s “Vice President” and yet she’s using that to make more noise about Marcos being buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani than looking for answers about the mysterious plane crash of her husband. I guess she’s just following the lead of Cory and Noynoy Aquino, wife and son of Ninoy who became presidents yet never bothered to find answers on who really had him “assassinated.” Maybe just like Leni, they already know.

And now Leni is justifying and defending Sen. Leila de Lima’s “frailties of a woman.” Why not use her position and influence to really defend and fight for the real abused women instead of using the issue of de Lima to project herself? She makes a lot of noises when President Duterte made a remark about her knees yet justified a clear case of sexual harassment and abuse of authority when Leila de Lima used her position as Secretary of Justice to shag her driver and security.

Let me ask, what has Leni Robredo done since she became “Vice President”? Nothing much really in helping the natives of these islands. But a lot in promoting herself and looking good while making President Duterte look bad. At the very least she could just do her job as Cabinet secretary in charge of housing and do something so that victims of Typhoon “Yolanda” could finally have a home some three years after./PN
