MANILA – Sen. JV Ejercito raised the possibility that former President Benigno Aquino III was “misinformed” on the P3.5-billion anti-dengue vaccination program of the Department of Health (DOH).
He believed not all information about the dengue vaccine Dengvaxia was disclosed to Aquino so that the “transaction w(ould) push through.”
“What’s evident is that the whole transaction was done in haste,” the senator said.
On Thursday, Aquino defended his administration’s decision to vaccinate public school children with Dengvaxia beginning April 2016.
“We would not insist on using this without the process completed,” Aquino said during the Senate hearing on Dengvaxia.
Ejercito said Aquino acted in “good faith” when he decided to allow the vaccine to be administered to students.
“It’s the other officials who might have taken advantage and did not give him an extensive report that includes the risks,” the senator said.
Dengvaxia manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur said its vaccine could worsen dengue among those not previously infected by the virus.
“Presidents rely on their Cabinet secretaries or heads of agencies for information on every important issues,” said Ejercito.
“A President would presume that the due diligence was done, that clinical tests were likewise completed and strict protocols were followed,” he added./PN
