KALIBO, Aklan – A municipal councilor was worried about what she said was the prevalence of motorcycle crashes in the town in recent months.

Sangguniang Bayan member Cynthia Dela Cruz said she was particularly concerned about the safety of children.

Dela Cruz said she will propose an ordinance that will serve as a localized version of the Children’s Safety on Motorcycles Act of 2015.

Under the Act, having a child on board a two-wheeled motorcycle on national roads is illegal, specifically if there is traffic, high density of fast-moving vehicles or the speed limit is more than 60 kilometers per hour.

Exceptions include: if the child’s feet can comfortably reach the motorcycle’s foot peg for the cushion; if the child’s arms can reach around and grasp the waist of the motorcycle rider; and if the child being transported requires immediate medical attention.

The child must wear a standard protective helmet, the law stated.

“The law only refers to implementation on national highways,” Dela Cruz said. “My local version would include all municipal and barangay roads in the town.”/PN
