Kalibo seeks ‘general’ sewage treatment plant

KALIBO, Aklan – The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) wants to establish a “general” wastewater treatment plant in this capital town.

The SB is currently working on a proposed ordinance that will institutionalize this measure, which is aimed at protecting the environment.

Councilor Cynthia Dela Cruz, chairwoman of the SB committee on environment, said all of them in the council are “working hard” to draft the proposed legislation.

“The improvement, maintenance, conservation, and protection of the ecosystem from pollution and degradation vis-à-vis the protection of public health are the primordial concerns of this town,” Dela Cruz stressed.

Most of households, businesses and other institutions in Kalibo use septic tanks for wastewater treatment and disposal.

If passed, the proposed ordinance will require “major establishments” to have a “septage system.”

Dela Cruz added that “all residences and establishments” must have “hygienic septic tanks” while “bigger establishments and offices” must have “wastewater treatment plants,” citing a report from the SB committee on laws.

The report also suggested that all houses and establishments must “attach to a general sewage system.”

It added that food establishments in Kalibo must have oil and grease tarp.

Septic waste haulers and all poso negro businesses in the town must also secure necessary permits, like the one needed for the dumping area./PN
