BACOLOD City – Mount Kanlaon remains to be under Alert Level II, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The volcano has been under a “moderate level of unrest” since late December last year.

Ma. Antonia Bornas, head of the Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division of Phivolcs, said the alert level remains to be in place after they monitored ground swelling and inflation beneath the volcano.

These ground changes were monitored through tilt meters and global positioning systems installed at the volcano’s crater which indicate tilt, distances and elevation increases.

Phivolcs records showed the volcanic hazards of Mount Kanlaon – including lava flows, pyroclastic density currents, ash fall, volcanic gases, flank or lateral eruption, and debris avalanche or sector collapse.

Debris avalanche or sector collapse is the “worst case” that can happen, said Bornas.

“In this scenario, whole scale evacuation of La Castellana, Canlaon City, Pontevedra, La Carlota, Moises Padilla, Hinigaran, Isabela, Binalbagan, and Himamaylan City will be needed,” Bornas added.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office identified Bago City, La Carlota City, Pontevedra, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Murcia, and San Carlos City as pyroclastic danger areas.

San Carlos City, Bago City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Murcia, and Moises Padilla were classified as lava danger areas.

Lahar danger areas, meanwhile, include Bago City, La Carlota City, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, San Enrique, Hinigaran, Binalbagan, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Murcia, Valladolid, and Isabela. (With a report from PIA/PN)
