BACOLOD City – A Thailand-based power company is eyeing Bago City, Negros Occidental as the potential site for a 150-megawatt windmill project — the firm’s first venture in the Philippines.
Initial discussions between Sermsang Power Corporation and Bago City officials took place on July 1, signaling a promising entry point for foreign investment in renewable energy.
Mayor Nichole Javellana-Yao welcomed the interest from Sermsang and expressed hope that the project will bring a surge of opportunities for the city and its residents.
“The future really looks so bright for Bago,” the mayor said. “Any investment that can help the Bagonhons, by generating jobs and creating more opportunities, is very welcome.”
She added that the local government is ready to assist investors and fast-track approvals.
Passakorn Panyaratanakorn, chief operating officer of Sermsang Power Corporation, shared that the company has been engaged in renewable energy development, particularly solar and wind power, for over 15 years.
“The reason we are here is because we’ve seen opportunities in Bago. We believe the city has strong potential for a windmill project,” he said.
The proposed wind energy project in Bago, featuring 23 turbines, is targeted to begin operations by the end of 2026. The turbines are designed to operate for at least 20 years.
In terms of employment, the company estimates that the project would initially provide jobs for at least 100 individuals, with priority given to local residents./PN
