NEGROS Occidental — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island spewed ash once more on Thursday afternoon, October 30, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In a Facebook post, Phivolcs reported that the ash emission occurred at 12:37 p.m. to 12:57 p.m. The volcano remains under Alert Level 2 due to increased unrest.
Kanlaon has shown repeated ash emissions in recent weeks following a relatively quiet period over the past months. On October 25, the volcano erupted three times, with ash plumes lasting 26 minutes to over an hour. Two additional emissions were recorded on October 23, with plumes rising up to 600 meters and sulfur dioxide levels exceeding 2,200 tonnes.
These recent ash events were preceded by an explosive eruption on October 24, which lasted three minutes and sent ash plumes soaring 2,000 meters high, causing ashfall and a sulfurous odor in nearby barangays. Since June 3, 2024, Kanlaon has erupted five times, including both minor and more explosive events, accompanied by 21 volcanic earthquakes.
The volcano’s previous explosive eruptions occurred shortly after the 2025 midterm elections and about a month earlier, producing ash and volcanic gases reaching 3,000 to 4,000 meters in height.
Phivolcs had downgraded Kanlaon Volcano from Alert Level 3 to Level 2 on July 29, following a decline in observed volcanic activity. Authorities continue to monitor the volcano closely and advise residents near the volcano to remain alert and follow safety protocols./PN
