Keep market transactions ‘honest, fair’

BACOLOD City – “Honest and fair” business transactions should be ensured in public markets in this city, according to Councilor Bartolome Orola.

The chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on market and slaughterhouse recently authored a resolution requesting the City Treasurer’s Office to conduct inspection in all markets in Bacolod in line with Republic Act 7394, or the Consumer Act of the Philippines.

The inspection should particularly focus on weighing scales used in the markets, said Orola in the resolution approved last week.

The weighing scales should be “properly tested, calibrated and sealed,” he added.

The councilor stressed that the inspection should be conducted every six months.

According to Orola, the City Treasurer’s Office has received reports that sealed weighing scales in the markets were tampered with by some vendors.

Anyone caught doing this “fraudulent practice” shall be met with penalties provided for under the law, Orola stressed.

He added that the consuming public must be made aware of this dishonest act.

Orola also said the public should report to proper authorities if they encounter vendors with “deceptive” weighing scales./PN
