MANILA – Kevin Quiambao’s debut with Goyang Sono Skygunners in the 2024-25 Korean Basketball League season was cut short by an ankle injury he sustained in the second quarter.

The former De La Salle University Green Archers star suffered the injury after stepping on an opponent’s foot while attempting a basket midway through the second frame of their lopsided 84-57 defeat to the Seoul SK Knights.

Quiambao, a two-time UAAP MVP awardee, finished with six points, hitting two three-pointers, and added one rebound in nearly six minutes of play off the bench for the Skygunners.

According to a media advisory from the Skygunners on Monday, Quiambao was diagnosed with a ruptured ankle ligament and will be out for at least four weeks.

“Kevin Quiambao received an MRI on Sunday afternoon. He was diagnosed with a ruptured ankle ligament and will be out for four weeks,” the team said.

The Skygunners dropped to a 9-20 win-loss record with the loss, while the SK Knights remained on top of the standings with their 22-6 record.

Javi Gomez de Liano, meanwhile, made his presence felt offensively as Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters stunned the Daegu Korea Gas Corporation Pegasus, 74-67, at the Anyang Arena.

The former University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons guard finished with 12 points, including two three-point conversions, to go with four rebounds and two blocks as the Red Boosters improved to an 8-21 record.

Jeong Hyo-geun led the way with 18 points, Deonte Burton added a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Park Ji-hoon and Bae Byung-jun tallied 10 points apiece as Anyang snapped a 10-game losing skid.

“The losing streak was too long, and I wanted to break it during the start of the new year, but we failed,” Jeong said in a post-game interview. “All the players must have been upset because they didn’t get the results. I’m glad we broke the losing streak.”

Meanwhile, Miguel Oczon tallied two points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals as the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus (20-8) walloped the Wonju DB Promy (13-15), 94-69./PN
