MANILA – Arthur dela Cruz’s debut with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings will have to wait until at least the 2018-2019 PBA Season.
The ruptured Achilles tendon that dela Cruz had during a recent practice will keep him out for another 10 months, Kings said.
Dela Cruz was traded to Kings from Blackwater Elite in August. His current team will also play without veteran forward Joe Devance, who had recently undergone surgery, at least until January.
“Sinabihan ko siya (dela Cruz) na kung may nararamdaman pa siya, huwag niya munang
pilitin,” said agent Danny Espiritu. “Baka mamaya hindi pa fully healed tapos pinilit niya na at ayan na nga ang nangyari.”
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters was also hit by the injury bug: it will open its Philippine Cup campaign without Ilonggo Jericho Cruz, Raymond Almazan, Anthony Washington, and Jireh Ibañes.
But Almazan has a chance to play against TNT KaTropa on Friday. The rest were expected to return to action early next year.
Painters head coach Carlos Garcia said he will bank on rookie guard Rey Nambatac during the lengthy absence of his three guard/forwards.
“We’re depleted right now and (Nambatac) is going to get his time at the beginning of the season,” Garcia said. “He is quick to adjust because he played for me before. He knows what kind of coach I am, and I know what kind of player he is.” /PN
