Ginebra downs Painters as NLEX upends Alaska
MANILA – Joe Devance came up with huge baskets in the fourth period as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings cruised to an 88-80 victory over Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in Game 1 of their PBA Philippine Cup best-of-three quarterfinals series.
Holding on to a slim 70-69 lead, Devance unloaded 5 straight points as Kings built a 79-69 advantage in the second game last night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
With the Painters threatening to come to within 75-82, Devance scored two baskets to make a comfortable lead for Ginebra.
Devance finished with 15 points – 9 coming in the fourth – for Kings. LA Tenorio led the charge with 16 while Japeth Aguilar and Earl Scottie Thompson had 14 points each.
In the first match, Kiefer Ravena came up with crucial plays in the endgame for NLEX Road Warriors to draw first blood against Alaska Aces 105-99.
With the scores tied 96-all, Ravena drew the attention of the defenders before giving a drop pass to Michael Miranda for the go-ahead basket. In the next play, Ravena made a tough layup to raise their lead 100-96.
Aces had its last stand, cutting the deficit to 99-101 on a triple by Simon Enciso, but steady hands by Ravena and Kevin Alas from the free throw line made for a 105-99 NLEX lead.
Ravena posted 25 points and eight assists while Larry Fonacier and Alas chipped in 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Chris Banchero top-scored for Aces with 20 points. Calvin Abueva finished with double-double 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Enciso had 16 points, including three treys.
Quarterfinals action resumes today with San Miguel Beermen taking on TNT KaTropa at 4:30 p.m. and Magnolia Hotshots facing GlobalPort Batang Pier at 7 p.m./PN
