MANILA – Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III is at one with President Rodrigo Duterte’s commitment for a “strong and resilient” Association of Southeast Asia Nations (Asean) in 2017.
The Philippines officially assumed the 10-member bloc Asean chairmanship last Jan. 1.
Pimentel, also Senate president, expressed support for Duterte’s priorities to promote regional cooperation and maritime security.
“These are key issues that the Asean must continually strive to maintain. He has articulated what the Asean could do to its citizens in this time of great change,” he said.
“It is to ensure stability and security, which will enhance opportunities for its citizens for a better life.”
According to the senator, the 50-year-old alliance is focused on growth agenda and citizen-centered initiatives.
“Nothing could be more important to the Asean in a region that is the most economically dynamic in the world,” he said.
Pimentel said that Duterte’s call for unit and cooperation enhances the Asean’s founding spirit to become a vehicle for peace and progress.
Meanwhile, both Houses of Congress have already identified priority legislation that seek to improve the people’s living condition and enhance the country’s role in the Asean.
These measures include the provisions of free tuition in state universities and colleges, free irrigation for farmers, universal health insurance coverage, and nutritious meals for students in public elementary schools./PN
