BACOLOD City – La Carlota City, Negros Occidental is prohibiting the sale of Coca-Cola products during festivals, fiestas and other celebrations.
It joined Hinigaran and Isabela in banning Coke beverages in response to calls for boycott of the beverage company for using high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
Under Executive Order No. 13 series of 2017, Mayor Luis Jalandoni III ordered the ban not only during the Pasalamat Festival this month but “for all time, unless they (Coca-Cola) use local sugar instead of HFCS as sweetener.”
The order, dated March 6, stated that the unabated entry of HFCS in the Philippines has led to the drop in sugar prices.
HFCS importation has a “far-reaching effect” on the local sugar industry, “the economy and … the millions in the labor sector,” it stated.
“The government is affirming its solidarity with the sugar industry, considering the small farmers and other beneficiaries and their families who will greatly suffer as they are highly dependent on sugar for their livelihood,” the order said.
In a related development, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental issued a resolution supporting the call of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. to ban Coke products during Panaad sa Negros next week./PN
