ILOILO City – The lack or inadequate infrastructures and facilities – this is the common concern of state universities and colleges (SUCs) in Western Visayas, according to Commissioner J. Prospero De Vera III of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
De Vera had been touring Region 6 and checking its 24 SUCs.
“Walang katapusan ang pangangailangan sa bagong infrastructures, maintenance of existing infrastructures and pangangailangan ng students ng equipment,” said De Vera who graced the recent investiture of Dr. Godelyn Gallega-Hisole as president of the Iloilo State College of Fisheries in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
The commissioner said he had meetings not only with officials of SUCs but also with students.
“I want to make sure that the decisions of the Board of Regents (of various SUCs) ay nakabatay doon sa totoong nangyayari,” said De Vera.
He also stressed the importance of keeping school campuses clean and beautiful.
Students must have an environment conducive for learning, De Vera stressed.
“One of the distinctive characteristics of top universities in Southeast Asia aside from good infrastructures is their very clean campuses,” he revealed.
CHED proposed a budget of P12.41 billion for 2018 but the Senate increased it by P1.68 billion, said De Vera.
Each of the 112 SUCs in the country would get 10 million for capital outlay or allocations for infrastructures and equipment totalling P1.12 billion, he revealed.
Each SUC would also be allocated P5 million for free internet./PN
