MANILA – Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson jokingly told Sen. Leila de Lima to return to the country after her travels abroad.
De Lima left the Philippines on Dec. 11 to “receive an award” in the United States and attend the Annual Conference on Cultural Diplomacy in Germany.
“In jest sabi ko sa kanya, bumalik ka, huwag mo ako gayahin,” Lacson said on Monday.
In 2010, Lacson left the country after he was charged with the double murder of publicist Salvador Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito in 2000.
The former Justice secretary, he added, assured him that she will return and face the charges filed against her.
Lacson said he does not see anything wrong with de Lima’s trip abroad because there is no arrest warrant against her.
“Wala naman siyang hold departure order. Lookout ‘yan sa kanya. Ito precisely ang Circular 41 na issued against former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Nagkaroon ng question noon, we were questioning precisely because nag-encroach ang Department of Justice (DOJ) sa authority ng court. Only the courts can issue a hold departure order,” the former police chief said.
Prior to her trip, de Lima urged everyone not to worry and assured she would “surely return.”
“Both visits are very important to me because as a senator, I will have a chance to speak before influential world leaders and global thinkers on raising awareness and support for human rights, an advocacy I am passionate about,” she furthered.
The new senator was issued an Allow Departure Order by the DOJ as “no case has yet been filed against her before the courts,” Sec. Vitaliano Aguirre said./PN
