MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles renewed its mastery of the De La Salle University Lady Spikers with a 12-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 victory at the close of UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball eliminations on Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Michelle Morente led the way with triple-double 14 points, 15 digs and 17 excellent receptions for the Lady Eagles, which finished the double-round eliminations on top with a 12-2 win-loss slate.

Bea de Leon chipped in 14 markers, while rookie Julia Samonte contributed a career-best 10 points for the Lady Eagles, which will have a twice-to-beat edge over No. 4 seed Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the Final Four.

What made the victory special for the Lady Eagles is that they managed without star player Jhoanna Maraguinot, who was rested by head coach Anusorn Bundit for the second straight game.

Maganda ang inilaro ng team. Yung posisyon ni Jho, napunan ni Jules. Parang parehas lang ang first six, wala lang si Jho,” said Lady Eagles assistant coach Sherwin Meneses.

The Lady Spikers took the opening set in dominating fashion before the Lady Eagles rebounded, with the veterans Morente and de Leon getting big a help from the reserves led by rookie Samonte.

Kim Dy returned from a one-game absence to finish with 15 points and five digs while Desiree Cheng added 13 points and 13 excellent receptions for the Lady Spikers, which will battle the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses in the semis./PN
