MANILA – The Meralco Bolts got back on the winning track in the 2017 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup with a 99-91 victory over the Alaska Aces on Saturday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Baser Amer led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds, while import Alex Stepheson had 17 points and 26 boards for the Bolts, which bounced back from its first defeat at the expense of the San Miguel Beermen.

Jared Dillinger finished with 15 markers, while Bacolodnon Justin Chua and Chris Newsome had 14 points each for the Bolts, which has tallied its fifth victory in six matches this conference.

With the defeat, the Aces slid down to a 4-1 win-loss record to tie with the  TNT Katropa, which claimed its fourth consecutive victory by whipping the struggling Mahindra Floodbuster (1-5).

The Bolts had a strong start behind Amer, Stepheson and Chua to build a 27-19 advantage, but the Aces managed to rally back early in the second quarter to tie the score at 29-all on back-to-back triples by Abel Gallinguez.

However, the Bolts managed to pull away again on consecutive inside conversions from Chua and Stephenson to build a 50-35 halftime lead on a last-minute layup by Joseph Yeo.

The Bolts continued its domination in the second half behind Dillinger and Newsome to build its largest lead at 86-62 on a conversion by Negrense Reynel Hugnatan. The Aces had its last push but it only came to as close as eight points.

Cory Jefferson top-scored with double-double 32 points and 13 rebounds for the Aces, which continued to play without injured stars Vic Manuel, Chris Banchero and Dondon Hontiveros./PN
