MANILA – De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ Mary Joy Baron is set to be named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the on-going UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Spikers middle blocker got the league’s highest individual award despite not winning other categories due to a consistent production in the defending champion’s matches this season.
The Tarlac-native bested Ateneo Lady Eagles’ Michelle Morente, National University Lady Bulldogs’ Jaja Santiago and teammate Kim Fajardo for the citation.
Santiago, however, will take home three awards namely Best Scorer, Best Spiker and Best Blocker, while Lady Spikers’ Fajardo will be awarded the Best Setter and Best Server plums.
In other awards, Lady Spikers’ Dawn Macandili is the Best Receiver, University of the East Lady Warriors’ Kath Arado is the Best Digger, while Lady Eagles newbie Jules Samonte is the Rookie of the Year despite appearing in just a number of games.
In the men’s division, Marck Espejo of defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles will get his fourth straight MVP plum to go along with his Best Scorer and Best Spiker award.
Espejo’s Blue Eagles’ teammates Esmilzo Polvorosa and Chumason Njigha are the Best Setter and Rookie of the Year awardee, respectively.
The league is set to award the season’s individual honors during Game 2 of the best-of-three championships on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum./PN
