MANILA – The San Sebastian College Lady Stags kept its unbeaten record in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-22 sweep over the Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals at the San Juan Arena.
Reigning two-time NCAA MVP Gretchel Soltones led the way with 12 points for the Lady Stags, which occupies solo first place in the standings with a 5-0 win-loss record.
Irish Oliveros and Danna Amponin added nine markers apiece, while Joyce Sta. Rita had eight for the Lady Stags, which was able to utilize its second stringers following a one-sided win.
The Lady Stags had a quick start in the first two sets behind Soltones, Nikka Dalisay and Sta. Rita as they took advantage of the Lady Generals’ multiple errors for a 2-0 set advantage.
With the Lady Stags relying on its reserve players in the third set, the Lady Generals were able to keep in step for a tied 20-all score. But Soltones was reinserted in the game to finish off the win in straight sets.
Despite the easy win, Lady Stags head coach Roger Gorayeb said he is still expecting much from his players as they hope to finish better than their runner-up places in the last two seasons.
“Sa ngayon wala pa kami sa level na kailangan namin para makuha ang championship,” Gorayeb said. “Kaunting jelling pa, kaunting pagma-mature as a team, maabot rin namin ‘yun.”
Ladeisheen Magbanua top-scored with nine points, while Yvette Yongco chipped in eight markers for the Lady Generals, which suffered its fifth straight defeat in as many outing./PN
