ILOILO City – Vice President Leni Robredo asked Ilonggos to help secure the ballots that would be transmitted from Iloilo to the Supreme Court (SC) for a recount in line with the electoral protest filed against her by defeated rival, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
She, however, declined to discuss the merits of the case, citing the gag order issued by the Supreme Court acting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET).
“Magpapatulong lang tayo sa mga dito na ma-secure ‘yung balota kasi dadalhin ‘yan from Iloilo to the Supreme Court,” she said yesterday at the University of the Philippines Visayas where she graced the launching of Babaenihan campaign of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) to raise awareness about the urgency of addressing teenage pregnancy through investments in education, health and economic opportunities.
Still, she expressed the belief that no cheating happened in Iloilo during the May 2016 national election.
“I think alam n’yo naman na wala,” said Robredo.
She stressed the importance of securing the ballots.
“’Yung pinaka-interest, hindi sya ma-tamper, hindi magkaroon ng access ‘yung iba na hindi naman authorized para pagdating sa Supreme Court ‘yung integrity n’ya intact. Alam naman natin na hindi nagkaroon ng dayaan dito,” said Robredo.
Marcos claimed he was cheated and sought a pilot manual recount of ballots in Iloilo, Negros Oriental and Camarines Sur provinces.
Marcos lost the vice presidential race to Robredo by 263,473 votes in the final and official tally of the Commission on Elections.
In Iloilo, Robredo obtain 573,729 votes against Marcos’ 94,411 votes./PN
