MANILA – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa should prove that the recent spate of killings were not state-sanctioned, said Vice President Leni Robredo said.
In an interview during a visit to Pasay City yesterday, Robredo said it is the obligation of the policemen to prove to the people that killings are not a policy of President Rodrigo Duterte under his war on drugs.
“Tingin ko, obligasyon ng kapulisan na ipakita sa tao na hindi nila sanctioned ‘yung ganitong mga patayan. Kasi kahit anong sabi, kung iba ‘yung nakikita, siyempre ‘yung tanong nandun palagi,” said Robredo.
On Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte defended the national police, after their chief cried foul over claims that government is pursuing a “policy” to kill drug suspects.
“Kaya umiyak ‘yung tao nga eh. It’s an insult na sabihin it’s a policy of the police to kill,” Duterte said. He spoke to reporters after attending the 55th anniversary of Metrobank in Taguig City.
Dela Rosa cried during Tuesday’s Senate investigation on the deaths of two teenagers in police operations, after Sen. Risa Hontiveros said there is a “system to the killings.”
“Walang salitang sasapat para maipahayag ang lungkot at pagkamuhi na dapat nating naramdaman sa tila walang tigil na patayang nagaganap, kung saan pati mga menor de edad ay napapagitna,” said Robredo.
She reiterated her call to put a stop on the spate of killings amid the government’s campaign against illegal drugs as she condemned the killings of teenagers Kian delos Santos, Carl Angelo Arnaiz and Reynaldo de Guzman.
“Ang isang lipunan kung saan maaring maging biktima ng kaharasan ang isa sa ating mga anak – tulad ng kapalarang inabot nina Kian, Carl at Reynaldo – ay hindi ligtas, hindi makatarungan at hindi katangagap-tanggap,” said Robredo.
She urged Filipinos to be united in calling for a stop to the killings.
“Ang isang lipunan kung saan ang ating mga anak ay maaaring mawala nang biglaan at matatagpuan na lamang na tadtad ng saksak at nakabalot ang ulo ng tape, ay isang lipunang kailanman ay hindi natin dapat tanggapin,” said the Vice President.
Dela Rosa denied it was a state policy to kill drug suspects. However, he said the deaths of a few suspects are expected. This, after Senator Hontiveros told the PNP chief that she was asking accountability from the President. (With a report from cnnphilippines/PN)
