FILIPINA-American high jumper Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks is not only after the gold medal during competitions – but also for a chance to find her father.
The 17-year-old Brooks, a native of Leon, Iloilo, has never seen her American father.
“I came from a broken family,” she told Panay News. “My father and my mother (then an overseas Filipino worker in Hong Kong) separated before I was born. But I believe time will come that I will be given the chance to know him.”
Brooks considers competitions as “an opportunity for me to know him.” The 5-foot-8 athlete added: “This is also a big chance for him to know that I am looking for him.”
Aside from excelling in sports, Brooks is also a consistent honor student – she makes sure her busy trainings do not get in the way of her education.
The high jumper was active in beauty pageants as well. She was crowned Mutya ng Buga 2013 and Miss Buga 2015, which gave her the chance to represent Leon in the Miss Teen Iloilo last year.
Recently Brooks won gold in the secondary girls’ high jump in the 2017 Iloilo Schools Sports Council Meet at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
Representing Iloilo National High School, she tallied a personal best 1.72 meters, shattering the 1.63 meters she made during the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in April in San Jose, Antique.
“The improvement in my performance won’t stop there. I will try to improve further in future competitions,” said Brooks. “I am also hopeful that one day I will be able to see my father.”/PN
