ILOILO –Estancia municipal mayor Rene Cordero said he was open to a lifestyle check.
He was among the government officials in Western Visayas named for the lifestyle check, according to National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Region 6 director Max Salvador in an interview over a local radio station.
However, Cordero said he has yet to receive a communication from the NBI regarding the matter.
“I am not hiding anything. My properties are open,” he said.
Cordero stressed all his properties were listed in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth.
The mayor believed the lifestyle check stemmed from allegations hurled at him by individuals with political agenda. He did not give names.
Cordero denied being a drug protector. He also said he was supportive of the government’s campaign against hard drugs.
NBI-6 has an ongoing lifestyle check on Iloilo City’s Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
But Salvador said past government officials in Western Visayas would also be checked.
Others he named for lifestyle checking over DyOK Aksyon Radyo Iloilo were former mayor Neptali Salcedo of Sara, Iloilo; mayors Ike Patricio of Pilar, Capiz and Angel Alan Celino of Roxas City; Mayor Jose Jeffrey Lomugdang of Culasi, Antique; and former congressman JC Rahman Nava of Guimaras province.
August last year, the President tagged Mabilog along with Iloilo mayors Mariano Malones of Maasin, Alex Centena of Calinog and Siegfredo Betita of Carles as drug protectors. All of them, however, denied this and more than a year after the President named and shamed them, none has been charged.
Salvador did not say how the NBI would go about with the lifestyle check.
President Duterte claimed local chief executives and “gangs” control the distribution of illegal drugs in the Visayas. He then branded Iloilo the “bedrock” of illegal drugs in a speech at the 120th anniversary of the Presidential Security Group on June 28. (PNA)
