KALIBO, Aklan – Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the provincial government is kicking off the holiday season with a special virtual giant Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the Goding Ramos Park in this capital town.

In previous years, the gargantuan Christmas tree was switched on by Aklan government officials in front of huge crowds. The Goding Ramos Park also hosted a food market.

With no public program to mark the occasion this year, Kalibonhons can simply watch the live broadcast of the event on Dec. 8 online, in partnership with Aklan Culture and Arts Foundation, Inc. (ACAFI).

ACAFI chairman Albert Menez said the Christmas tree will be lit throughout December.

The giant Christmas tree would be made almost entirely of recycled materials. It would be put up by the Provincial Engineering Office, ACAFI and the Provincial General Services Department.

Other trees in the provincial capitol area will also be decorated with lights.

“We hope this affair will bring positivity, hope and unity,” said Menez./PN
