BACOLOD City – To protect his mango tree from indiscriminate fruit harvesting, a resident of Barangay Guiljungan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental placed a live wire on it.

But the 67-year-old Angelito Gregas was filled with remorse when his nephew and teenaged grandson who climbed the tree got electrocuted and killed.

George Alipoon, 47, and Rogie Sancho, 15, were clueless there was a live wire on the tree, the municipal police said.

They were taking a bath at a water pump in the compound of Gregas around 11:30 a.m. on May 20 when they thought of climbing up the mango tree. That was when they unmindfully touched the live wire.

Alipoon and Sancho sustained burns on their bodies. They were rushed to a hospital but were declared “dead on arrival.”

Gregas was taken to the Cauayan police station.

On that day a 19-year-old Kabankalan City resident was electrocuted at the Negros Occidental High School quadrangle. A Silay City resident was also electrocuted inside a poultry farm in Barangay Poblacion VI on May 19. Both died./PN
