BACOLOD City – Alert Level No. 2 was still raised over Mount Kanlaon but locals feeling the restiveness of the volcano appeared complacent, according to Mayor Rhumyla Mangilimutan of La Castellana, Negros Occidental.
But Mangilimutan assured that the local government’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office personnel remained on full alert even though the seismic activity has lied low.
Residents in two barangays directly affected by the restiveness of the volcano continued to live normally, said the mayor.
“Everything is OK even though the alert level was not yet lowered,” Mangilimutan said.
According to the mayor, the locals did not show any sign of fear as they went about with their daily routine even after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level.
Barangays Puso and Cabacungan were right at the foot of Mount Kanlaon.
“Sang una gani sang nalupok to, daw wala man lang to (The volcano has erupted before but nothing serious happened),” Mangilimutan quoted the locals as telling her.
But when some barangays claimed smelling sulfur on Friday last week, the mayor said she suspended classes in all levels to prevent panic among schoolchildren.
The Office of the Mayor and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office purchased emergency food packs that will be distributed to evacuees in case of a huge eruption, said Mangilimutan.
Covered courts and barangay community centers have already been designated as evacuation centers, she added./PN
