SAN JOSE, Antique – Solong Bridge, the “longest steel bridge” in Panay Island, in Sibalom town will be opened to the public next month.
People may soon finally able to use the P91-million, 360-meter structure after a decade of waiting, said Gov. Rhodora J. Cadiao.
The inauguration is tentatively on June 9.
Solong Bridge will be beneficial to the 18 barangays in Sibalom, as well as those in Patnongon and San Remigio whose residents find difficulty crossing the Sibalom River, especially during the rainy season, said Cadiao.
Engr. Bernie Quiman of the project contractor International Builders Corp. said on Tuesday they were working round the clock to finish the bridge as soon as possible.
Construction was already “around 80 percent” complete, but poor weather was hampering their work, Quiman said.
Residents of barangays Solong and Villar were looking forward to using the bridge, which has a weight capacity of 400 tons.
Jinky Fadol said she used to work at the Sibalom town proper but because of difficulty in crossing the river, she quit her job and just looked for another source of income in their barangay.
On the other hand, Maritess Fadol said the bridge will make it easier and safer for son Randy to reach Sibalom National High School in the town proper. (PNA)
