‘Love Boracay’ to promote responsible, sustainable tourism

MALAY, Aklan – The Boracay Inter-Agency Rehabilitation Management Group (BIARMG) will conduct an initiative to celebrate the rehabilitation efforts in the world-famous island.

The weeklong celebration dubbed as “Love Boracay: Celebrate, Rehabilitate” will run from April 26 to May 1.

The low-key event this April marks the first anniversary of Boracay’s 6-month closure as ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2018.

The celebration aims to create a sense of consciousness and participation for stakeholders, residents and tourists to support government’s efforts on responsible and sustainable tourism.

BIARMG general manager Natividad Bernandino said the celebration will include activities like forum, retro music in the night in establishments and paraw sailing.

“Love Boracay” will also help the stakeholders to better understand the importance of the environment in Boracay’s tourism industry.

In 2018, the government’s interagency task force decided to cancel all Laboracay nonstop beach parties till the wee hours amid the rehabilitation of Boracay Island.

Smoking and drinking in public places in rehabilitated Boracay area were also prohibited.

National authorities also implemented new rules that require visitors prior to their stay in Boracay to book their accommodations. (With a report from Akean Forum/PN)
