XXVI. Goose chase

A silent comedy.

He spanks her.

She spanks another.

The other spanks still another.

To transform comedy to tragedy,

substitute ‘spanking’ with ‘love.’

*

Dulce had a little make up on, her lips glossed, dressed in pretty much the same brown frilly dress, but with less ruffles this time.

Her eyes gleaming with tears, she held the baby in her arms.

Matt looked at her.

Then, the baby.

Then, Dulce again.

*

A light bulb lighted in his head.

Satori.An enlightenment, sudden illumination.

His mind solved the puzzle. He smiled.

My name is Dulce Amor.

I must thank you for taking care of my baby last night.

He is the son of the bakunawa.

*

Matt squirmed with discomfort.

Dulce extended her hand to shake Matt’s.

He looked at her hand, sighed, was about to take it, when she turned her head and saw something in the crowd.

As if in shock, she withdrew her extended arm.

*

Emilio! she exclaimed, mostly to herself.

Then to Matt, with excitement, It’s Emilio!

She called out to the crowd, Emilio! I’m here, Emilio!

In the crowd, an indistinct man in white waved to her, turned, and pushed through the crowd.

Dulce handed the baby to Matt, who was rather shocked, clueless about what was going on.

*

Dulce pushed Matt out of the way, ran after the man in white, Emilio, I’m here. Wait for me!

Not knowing what to make of the scene, the audience broke into an ecstatic applause.

Some girls in the audience took it as part of Matt’s performance, That was so cool. Very cool.

Really! I don’t know how it connects to his singing. But that was rather dramatic.

Yeah, what a performance!

*

Matt started to run after Dulce, Wait! Hey, wait!

He ran downstage, The baby!

The audience applauded some more.

In a distance, the scene looked like a silent comedy — Matt running after Dulce, who was running after the man in white among the audience that aside from those wearing the blue-green bakunawa and red shrimp costumes, were dressed pretty much alike in their whites and browns. (To be continued)/PN
