XXVIII. Classmates
Maybe they were right: All work and no play makes Jane a dull girl.

A year ago, at the university library, Dulce was inspecting Magical Realist fiction on the shelves when her classmates Liezel and Bulak joined her.
Giggling, they said, Hey, Dulce. Where were you yesterday? We were looking for you, girl.
We watched Papa Piolo’s new movie. My gosh, it was so exciting.
Sorry, I had some readings to do. Term paper.
Oh! It’s a pity you missed the movie.
Piolo was sexier than ever. So thrilling to see him on screen. Oh, I’m so in love with him!

Girl, you’ve got to cut some slack, said Liezel.
You are so serious about school.
It’s almost the end of the term, Dulce said meekly.
That’s exactly my point.
You’ve been buried in schoolwork the whole year through.
I have an idea. Why don’t you go with us to the Bakunawa Festival this year?
Isla PulangPasayan? Dulce felt stupid asking because she had heard things about the festival.

You’ve never been there. Come with us. We’ll stay at Bulak’s.
Bulak volunteered, Our house is not big at all, but you are welcome to stay there.
Dulce just shrugged, I don’t know.
Say yes. It will be cool.
Many celebrities and eligible bachelors go to the island every summer for the festival.
Movie stars and TV personalities from Manila often go to party at the festival.
The last time I went, Liezel said, Jet Alcantara was there, and he was so nice.

I still can’t forget my summer with the hunks on the fifth Bakunawa Festival, Bulak said boastfully.
They were the special guests.
I got all their autographs: Papa Piolo, Diet, Echo, Emir, and Bernard.
I really don’t know, Dulce said, but we will see.
Bulak and Liezel chorused, Go! Just do it!
