MANILA – The Loyola Meralco Sparks Football Club continued its winning run in the 2016 United Football League with a 2-1 escape over rival Kaya Football Club on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Phil Younghusband and Joaquin Canas each fired a goal for the Loyola Meralco Sparks, which moved up to solo second place in the standings with 39 points on a 13-4-1 win-loss-draw slate.
The Loyola Meralco Sparks became aggressive to start the match with multiple attempts from Alfred Osei and Simon Greatwich. They finally scored a goal as Younghusband drained one from a pass by Kou Belgira in the 25th minute.
Younghusband nearly drained his second goal in the 41st minute but his attempt was blocked by Kaya goal keeper Miguel Tanton to finish the first half with a slim 1-0 lead.
After an exchange of misses from both teams early in the second half, the Loyola Meralco Sparks increased its advantage to 2-0 as Canas scored from a timely cross by Younghusband.
But Kaya was able to get one back as Eric Giganto scored from a missed attempt by his teammate Ilonggo Jovin Bedic. Kaya had multiple opportunities to tie the score but their shots were well-defended.
Meanwhile, the JP Voltes Football Club moved up to share third place with the Ceres-La Salle Football Club following a default victory over the Laos Football Club, which failed to complete a team during the kickoff time.
JP Voltes is now tied with Bacolod City-based Ceres-La Salle at third place with 38 points apiece, while Kaya is at fifth place with 34 points on a 11-6-1 slate./PN
