MANILA – The Liberal Party (LP) respects the decision of Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog to leave the former ruling party.
Mabilog resigned from the party to be “independent” and “focus on my job” in the last two years of his final term as mayor.
“Perhaps the LP has become a hindrance in his desire to serve his constituents more effectively,” the party president Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan told Panay News.
Pangilinan confirmed that Mabilog — now on his third and final term — tendered his resignation in writing two weeks ago.
Mabilog denied that his resignation was due to President Rodrigo Duterte’s repeated criticisms linking him to the illegal drug trade.
On several occasions, Duterte referred to Mabilog as a cousin of the slain suspected Iloilo drug lord Melvin Odicta Sr.
Pangilinan said the Ilonggo mayor did not mention such in his resignation letter.
“While we would have wanted him to stay on during these challenging times for the Party and the nation, we respect his decision to leave us,” said the party president.
He added that the LP wishes Mabilog “good luck” and “all the best.”/PN
