MANILA – Lyceum Pirates moved closer to an outright finals seat in the NCAA Season 93 men’s seniors basketball after a 100-63 victory over Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers last night at the San Juan Arena.
Jaymar Perez led the way with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals while Bacolodnon Spencer Pretta and Ralph Tansingco contributed nine markers apiece.
With a 7-0 win-loss record, the Pirates can gun for an outright finals seat when it completes a double-elimination round sweep by beating defending champion San Beda Red Lions on Oct. 19.
Holding to a slim 42-39 lead early in the third quarter, the Pirates went on a huge run on back-to-back hits by Perez and conversions from Michael Ayaay and JC Marcelino to build a huge 61-43 edge.
The Heavy Bombers tried to make a run late in the third canto on hits by Lloyd Castor but the Pirates was quick to respond as it build its largest lead at 27 points on back-to-back triples by Tansingco.
In the other match, the Red Lions turned to Robert Bolick in the endgame to score an 83-78 win over Colegio de San Juan De Letran Knights to remain at second place behind the Pirates.
Trailing 63-61 with just four minutes in the game, Bolick spearheaded a huge 11-2 scoring run with his inside hits as the Red Lions snatched a 72-65 lead on an inside hit by Arnaud Noah.
Bolick finished with 13 points for the defending champion Red Lions, which improved to 16-1 win-loss slate. The Knights, meanwhile, has slid down to a three-way tie at fourth spot with 8-9 record./PN
