ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has quietly left the Liberal Party (LP).

He submitted his resignation letter to LP senator Francis Pangilinan last week yet.

Mabilog said he wanted to be “independent” and “focus on my job” in the last two years of his final term as mayor.

He denied that his decision had something to do with President Rodrigo Duterte’s name-shaming him as a drug protector.

Neither was he pressured to resign from the former ruling party, he clarified.

Mabilog also said he had not received any invitation to join the administration’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

The mayor joined LP when he ran for mayor in 2010. His then political ally Cong. Jerry Treñas left the LP for PDP-Laban just weeks after Duterte won the presidency last year.

Mabilog’s resignation left LP city councilors pondering about their political affiliations, too.

“Paano na lang kami? Pero siling nya sige lang bala. Salig man kami sa hambal ni Mayor kay wala man ina sya nagapabaya basta kaupod sa pulitika,” said a city councilor who asked not to be named.

Last month, Treñas invited city councilors who were once his colleagues in the LP to join PDP-Laban.

“For the moment, ako lang isa ang PDP-Laban diri,” according to Treñas.

The invitation was made a week after it was reported that President Duterte picked Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon as his point man in Iloilo City.

Treñas, however, denied the invitation was prompted by the President’s meeting with Ganzon and the political implications of such meeting.

“Kon may i-appoint, wala man kaso sa akon,” said Treñas.

As of this writing, it was unclear if Ganzon had taken oath as PDP-Laban member.

The councilors Treñas met were R Leone Gerochi, Jay Treñas, Reyland Hervias, Eduardo Peñaredondo, Lady Julie Grace Baronda, Ely Estante, Armand Parcon, Mandrie Malabor, Liezl Joy Zulueta, and Candice Magdalene Tupas./PN
