ILOILO City — The motorcycle rider caught on viral video speeding through a pedestrian crossing in Iloilo City has admitted deliberately ignoring the zebra lane despite seeing people crossing, prompting the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 to evaluate possible legal and administrative penalties against him.
The admission has sharpened LTO-6’s warning to motorists that being in a hurry — whether for work, deliveries or other transactions — can never justify violating traffic laws and endangering pedestrians.
The rider appeared before the LTO-6 regional office after the agency issued a Show Cause Order (SCO) over the incident along Diversion Road in Mandurriao district.
In his written explanation, the rider acknowledged that he saw pedestrians using the designated crossing but proceeded anyway because he was rushing to pick up parcels for delivery.
He apologized for the violation and assured Regional Director Gaudioso P. Geduspan II that he would not repeat it.
“Being in a hurry to work, or any transaction, does not give you the license to disregard traffic rules and regulations,” Geduspan said.
The viral footage showed several vehicles stopping to give way to pedestrians at the zebra crossing before the motorcycle rider bypassed the stationary traffic and drove through the crosswalk while people were still crossing.
An angered pedestrian struck the rider on the head as the motorcycle squeezed past.
The video quickly spread online and triggered debate over reckless driving, pedestrian rights and road discipline.
Geduspan stressed that motorists must yield once pedestrians step onto a designated crossing, underscoring that possession of a driver’s license carries an obligation to protect other road users.
“Being in a hurry to get to work, or finish an important transaction, is never a free pass to ignore traffic rules,” said Geduspan, calling on all motorists — especially those whose livelihoods rely on maintaining a valid license — to strictly obey traffic laws.
He emphasized that saving a few seconds on the road should never be placed above human safety.
Geduspan has ordered the LTO-6 Intelligence and Investigation Unit to thoroughly evaluate the allegations contained in the SCO together with the rider’s written explanation to determine the appropriate legal and administrative penalties.
The case also serves as a broader warning to motorists that a driver’s license is a privilege carrying responsibilities toward pedestrians and other road users, LTO-6 said./PN
