NEGROS Occidental – A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Negros Occidental early Tuesday morning, October 7, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.
The quake, which was of tectonic origin, occurred at 8:04 a.m. with its epicenter located 42 kilometers north-northwest of Sipalay City at a depth of 11 kilometers. PHIVOLCS said the tremor was caused by sudden movement along faults and plate boundaries in the region.
The earthquake was also slightly felt in Iloilo City, which reported a PHIVOLCS Intensity II, meaning the tremor was “slightly felt” by a few individuals at rest indoors. Meanwhile, Bago City in Negros Occidental registered an Instrumental Intensity I, described as “scarcely perceptible.”
No damage or casualties have been reported. However, PHIVOLCS warned residents to remain vigilant, as aftershocks may occur following the main tremor.
PHIVOLCS encourages the public to follow standard earthquake safety measures, secure heavy furniture, and be prepared for possible aftershocks./PN
