KALIBO, Aklan – Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said Malacañang recognizes the autonomy of the local government units over the world-famous Boracay Island.

Roque stressed that the Duterte administration does not plan to override Aklan provincial government and Malay municipal government’s control over the island.

He said this on Saturday in a press briefing in this capital town.

“Rest assured that President Duterte is for federalism, which means empowering local government units. So this automatically means that the Malacañang respects the autonomy of the local government units over Boracay,” Roque stressed.

He added, “During initial discussions, both the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism (DOT) have recommended that an executive order should soon be released by President Rodrigo Duterte. The next Cabinet meeting will be on Feb. 25 and I am not yet sure if the executive order for Boracay will be in the agenda then.”

Roque assured local officials that DOT’s Tourism Infrastructure Economic Zone Authority has already approved the P1.16-billion drainage project for Boracay.

The project, when completed, is eyed to solve the flooding problem in the island.

“The construction of the Phase 2 project will start by February or March this year. It is hoped to be completed by the year 2020,” Roque said.

Rep. Carlito Marquez (Aklan) believes that the drainage project will be the “lasting solution” to the flooding problem in Boracay. (PNA/PN)
