Malay eyes banning ‘single-use plastics’

MALAY, Aklan – The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) is eyeing to ban “single-use plastics” in this town, which includes the world-famous Boracay Island.

“A big percentage of Boracay’s trash is composed of ‘single-use plastics’ utilized by certain business establishments,” said Councilor Maylynn Graf, chairwoman of the SB committee on environment.

“Single-use plastics,” or disposable plastics, are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. Examples of these are plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles, and most food packaging.

Graf is sponsoring a proposed ordinance that would ban these single-use plastics in Malay.

She added that the “convenience offered by several establishments in Boracay and Malay” is seen through the “growing stream of waste being generated daily.”

If the proposal becomes an ordinance, waste reduction will be improved in Malay, said Graf.

She added that if ever, it will be the first municipal ordinance of its kind in the country./PN
