Man shot on New Year’s Day in Barotac Viejo

ILOILO – A 27-year-old man spent the first day of 2025 at a hospital after he was shot in Sitio Maranog Bato, Barangay San Geronimo, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo.

Alias “Romel” sustained a gunshot wound on his back. He was recuperating at Don Jose S. Monfort Medical Center in Barotac Nuevo town.

Police Major Felix Alianza, chief of the Barotac Viejo Municipal Police Station (MPS), said Romel’s father visited the residence of the suspect identified as Gerry in Sitio Tool House, Barangay San Lucas, on Wednesday morning, January 1. A confrontation ensued between them and the father later returned home and told Romel that Gerry had slapped him during the argument.

Enraged by the incident, Romel reportedly confronted Gerry, leading to another heated dispute. During the altercation, Gerry allegedly shot Romel using a homemade .9mm pistol at around 9:20 a.m.

Following the shooting, Gerry voluntarily surrendered to punong barangay Levi Aliasan of La Fortuna, Barotac Viejo.

Also, the firearm used in the incident is now in police custody.

Police said the suspect was detained at the Barotac Viejo MPS. A case of frustrated murder was being prepared against him./PN
