ILOILO City – The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSDWO) distributed relief packs to victims of a fire that struck barangays Bakhaw and Bolilao, Mandurriao district on Aug. 31.
The victims are temporarily staying at Bolilao Elemenatry School, Bakhaw daycare center, youth center, health center and covered gym.
The fire gutted over 80 houses.
According to Evelyn Mandal, daycare worker in Mandurriao, they were able to distribute to each displaced family one sack of rice good for 15 days of consumption.
There were also canned goods, bottled water and other food packs.
The city government is also set to release cash assistance – P5,000 for each household with a totally damaged house and P3,000 each for households with partially damaged houses.
The fire victims were also appealing for other donations in kind such as cooking and kitchen utensils.
The blaze started around 11:30 a.m. at the house of Jona Kasigna-signa in Barangay Bolilao, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.
Most of the houses – many operating as boardinghouses – were made of light materials so the fire spread fast.
According to Senior Fire Officer 1 Rollin Hormina, around 10 persons sustained minor injuries.
