ILOILO City – In line with its 116th anniversary, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Regional Association of National Government Executives, spearheaded the mangrove-planting activity on Saturday morning at the Iloilo Esplanade.

Themed “Sigaw ng Lingkod Bayani: Malasakit para sa Taumbayan, Kapwa Kawani, at Kalikasan,” the event aims to spread awareness on environment protection.

Rodolfo B. Encajonado, CSC regional director said “the purpose of this activity is to let people know that we care for the environment, because we cannot give what we do not have.”

“We should first clean up our heart and mind, and invite ourselves the cleanliness of our surroundings. Through tree planting, we can help our environment clean and it will return back to us,” Encajonado added.

There were 500 seedlings prepared for the mangrove-planting activity. There were also prepared holes and sticks for the participants.

According to National Geographic, mangroves “live life on the edge, with one foot on land and one in the sea. The botanical amphibians occupy a zone of desiccating heat, choking mud, and salt levels that would kill an ordinary plant within hours.” Yet, the forests mangroves form are among the most productive and biologically complex ecosystems on Earth./PN
