MANILA – Newly crowned World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has finally broken his silence on a possible rematch with American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year.
In an online interview days after his unanimous decision win over American Jessie Vargas, Pacquiao said he is willing to fight another match with Mayweather “if that is what the boxing fans wants.”
“My contract is not mine alone, but also belongs to the boxing fans,” Pacquiao said in an online interview. “If the fans want a rematch, then why not? We can easily talk about that.”
Pacquiao added that, if ever there will be a rematch between him and Mayweather, he will make sure that he will be in his best condition unlike in their first encounter when the Filipino boxer was nursing a shoulder injury.
“I believe that if ever there will be a rematch against Mayweather, I want to make sure the fans will love it,” Pacquiao said. “I will give with all I can do to get back the trust of the boxing fans.”
The name of Mayweather has emerged as one of the next possible opponents of Pacquiao along with Terrence Crawford, Juan Manuel Marquez and Kell Brook after his clinical win over Vargas.
Mayweather has repeatedly shot down the possibility of a rematch with Pacquiao insisting that his unanimous decision win over Andre Berto late last year was his last professional boxing bout.
Mayweather and Pacquiao first faced each other on May 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena where the Las Vegas-native ran away with a 118-110, 116-112 and 116-112 unanimous decision win.
In case the rematch with Mayweather pushes through, the eight-division world boxing champion said that it will likely take place between March to May of next year when the Senate is on recess./PN
